Discover Europe’s Wedding Hotspots
Some places earn their popularity for practical reasons as much as romantic ones. Cyprus, Malta and Gibraltar share warm Mediterranean weather, English widely spoken, short flights from northern Europe and legal systems that welcome couples from abroad. Each one, though, offers a distinctly different kind of celebration, and choosing between them is mostly a matter of style, timing and how much paperwork you are willing to handle.
Cyprus is the choice for sunshine and simplicity. Municipal marriage offices in Paphos, Limassol and Ayia Napa conduct civil ceremonies in English almost every week of the year, and some will send an officer to a hotel terrace by the sea. Beyond the beaches, the Troodos mountains hide stone villages and family wineries, and the island's generous meze culture turns a reception into a feast. Malta, by contrast, is all about architecture: privately owned baroque palazzi with walled gardens, the silent walled city of Mdina and the bastions of Valletta glowing gold above the Grand Harbour, with rural Gozo a short ferry ride away for a slower, greener mood.
Gibraltar is in a category of its own. With no residency period and a short list of documents, it is the quickest place in Europe to marry legally, and couples often wed within a day or two of arriving. The Rock itself provides spectacular views of Africa across the Strait, and the Andalusian coast just over the border gives plenty of room for a larger reception. Whether you want a relaxed island weekend, an elegant historic setting or a swift, beautiful legal ceremony, one of these three is likely to fit.

Good to know · Q&A
Frequently asked questions
01 /Which of the three is easiest for a legally binding wedding?
Gibraltar is the fastest, with no minimum stay and a short document list, so ceremonies can happen within a day or two of arrival. Cyprus is also straightforward, with municipalities handling foreign couples routinely and needing you on the island for only a few days beforehand. Malta requires applications to the Marriage Registry within a fixed window before the date, so it rewards couples who plan a few months ahead.
02 /Are same-sex marriages possible in these countries?
Malta has allowed same-sex marriage since 2017 and Gibraltar since 2016, with ceremonies on the same terms as for any couple. Cyprus offers civil cohabitation partnerships rather than marriage for same-sex couples, so many choose a symbolic ceremony on the island after a legal union elsewhere. Recognition at home always depends on your own country's laws.
03 /When is the best season for each destination?
Cyprus has the longest season, running from April to November with the warmest sea in September and October. Malta shines in spring and autumn, when gardens bloom and the heat is gentle. Gibraltar's mild climate makes it suitable year round, which is helpful for elopements in winter when other Mediterranean resorts are quiet.
04 /How do guests travel to Cyprus, Malta and Gibraltar?
Cyprus is served by Larnaca and Paphos airports, with flights of around four to five hours from northern Europe. Malta International Airport is about three hours from most European capitals and only minutes from Valletta. Gibraltar has its own small airport with flights from the UK, while most other guests fly into Málaga and drive along the coast in about 90 minutes.
05 /Which destination suits a large wedding?
Cyprus has the widest range of large resorts and ballrooms, making it ideal for big guest lists and long weekends. Malta's palazzi and grand hotels handle sizeable weddings elegantly, though the most intimate settings in Mdina are better for smaller groups. Gibraltar's space on the Rock is limited, so larger weddings usually combine a ceremony there with a reception across the border in Andalusia.
06 /How do costs compare across the three?
Cyprus generally offers the best value for food, drink and accommodation, especially outside July and August. Malta sits in the middle, with venue hire fees at private palazzi forming a large part of the budget. Gibraltar can be very economical for an elopement, while larger receptions tend to cost more because space is scarce, so many couples use the Spanish side to stretch their budget.
07 /What local traditions can we include?
In Cyprus, couples often borrow the money dance, when guests pin notes to the couple, or serve resi, a traditional wedding dish. Maltese weddings may include a ftira or ricotta-filled sweets, and fireworks are part of the island's festa culture. In Gibraltar, a sherry welcome and calentita canapés reflect the territory's mix of British and Andalusian heritage.
08 /Can we combine the wedding with a honeymoon nearby?
Yes, all three make excellent starting points. From Cyprus, a few days in the Troodos or a cruise to the Greek islands are popular. Malta pairs well with Sicily, a short ferry away. From Gibraltar, Seville, Ronda and the white villages of Andalusia are within reach, and Tangier in Morocco is just across the Strait.
09 /How far ahead should we start planning?
For peak summer weekends at popular venues in Cyprus and Malta, 12 to 18 months gives the widest choice. Smaller weddings and midweek dates can often be planned in six months. Gibraltar elopements can come together in a matter of weeks once documents are ready, which makes it a favourite for couples who decide late.
