Where the Money Goes: A Realistic Budget for a Wedding in Braga and the Minho
A realistic Braga wedding budget: how venue hire, catering, wine, music, flowers, transport and planning fees break down in Portugal's green north.
Why the Minho stretches a budget
Couples who start looking at Portuguese weddings often begin with Lisbon or the Algarve and are surprised by the prices of the best-known venues. Travel an hour north of Porto, though, and the numbers change noticeably. In Braga and the surrounding Minho region, venue hire, catering and accommodation tend to cost considerably less, while quality remains high.
That does not mean everything is cheap. Monastery hotels, famous sanctuaries and grand manor houses carry fees that reflect their status. But the overall cost of a celebration here usually leaves room for extras that would be unaffordable elsewhere, such as live music all evening or an extra day of activities for guests. A morning at a vinho verde estate or an evening of folk dancing costs a fraction of what similar experiences would elsewhere.
Below we look at where the money typically goes, with the caveat that every wedding is different. Use it as a guide to proportions rather than a quotation.

Venue: the anchor of the budget
Venue hire typically takes between fifteen and twenty-five percent of the total budget. Prices vary widely: a sanctuary hotel or monastery pousada with exclusive use on a summer Saturday is at the top end, while a family manor house on a Friday in September can be considerably more modest.
Some venues charge a flat fee for exclusive use, while others include the rental in the catering cost per guest. When comparing quotes, check what is included: chairs, tables, linen, lighting, cleaning and staff hours can all be listed separately. Ask, too, whether there is a minimum spend on food and drink, and what happens if your final numbers fall below it.
Accommodation on site can also be part of the deal. Booking all rooms for the weekend often secures exclusive use of gardens and terraces, a real advantage when the guest list is fifty to a hundred people.
Food and wine: where to invest
Catering is the largest single cost, often thirty-five to forty-five percent of the budget. In the Minho a full wedding menu traditionally includes a long cocktail hour with abundant canapés, a seated dinner with fish and meat courses, a dessert buffet, the cake and a late-night supper. It is generous by any standard.
The good news is that wine is very reasonably priced. Vinho verde from local estates, Douro reds and Bairrada sparkling wine can be served throughout the evening without breaking the bank. Many caterers include an open bar in their per-head price, but always check which brands and how many hours.
If you want to save, reduce the number of courses rather than the quality. Guests will remember one superb main course more than three average ones. Equally, a late-night caldo verde and grilled chouriço station costs very little and is always the most popular moment after midnight.

Music, flowers and the details
Entertainment usually accounts for around ten percent. A string quartet for the ceremony, a folk group for the cocktail hour and a band or DJ for dancing are typical. Northern Portugal has excellent musicians at fair prices, so live music all day is within reach for many couples. Book musicians early for June, when São João celebrations keep the best bands busy across the north.
Flowers and décor represent another ten to fifteen percent. The Minho's gardens produce camellias in winter, hydrangeas in early summer and abundant greenery all year, so seasonal, local flowers keep costs down and look naturally at home. Candles, lanterns and linens can often be hired from the venue.
Stationery, favours and small details add up quietly. Locally made filigree charms or bottles of vinho verde as favours are both affordable and meaningful.
Photography, beauty and attire
A skilled photographer and videographer together typically account for around ten percent. Many of the best Portuguese wedding photographers are based in the north, so you avoid travel costs by hiring locally.
Hair and make-up artists are inexpensive compared with most of Western Europe, and many will stay through the ceremony for touch-ups. If you are bringing an outfit from home, budget for steaming and pressing on arrival; your venue may be able to help. Trial sessions can usually be arranged the day before the wedding rather than months in advance.
Consider a second shooter if your timeline involves both a church ceremony in Braga and a reception in the countryside, so that guests arriving at the venue are captured while you are still signing the register.
Transport and guest logistics
Transport usually takes five to ten percent of the budget. Coaches from Porto airport for arrival and departure days, and from hotels to the venue on the wedding day, are essential if guests are spread out across the Minho.
A vintage car for the couple is a pleasant touch and inexpensive here. If you choose a venue at Bom Jesus, remember that large coaches may have restrictions on the hill roads, so smaller minibuses can be more practical. Factor in driver overtime if you expect the party to run past one in the morning.
Welcome bags with maps, local sweets and a timetable cost little but help guests feel cared for and reduce the number of phone calls on the day.
Planning fees and contingency
Our planning fees appear on this page as starting prices for each service level, and they reflect the work involved in coordinating suppliers, legal paperwork and logistics across a rural region. For many couples, partial planning is enough in the Minho, as venues often provide a strong in-house team. Coordination alone suits couples who have already booked most suppliers themselves and simply need a calm hand on the weekend.
Always keep five to ten percent of your budget as a contingency for weather changes, extra transport or last-minute guests. In a region where rain is never far away, having funds available for a marquee or extra umbrellas brings real peace of mind.
With careful planning, a wedding in Braga can feel lavish and abundant without the price tag of Portugal's better known destinations. That generosity is, after all, the spirit of the north.
