From Town Hall to Taverna: A Long Weekend Wedding in Cyprus
A three day Cyprus wedding weekend: a Paphos town hall ceremony, a meze reception, Troodos wine villages and a beach farewell, with practical tips for guests.
Why a weekend works so well here
Cyprus rewards couples who spread the celebration over three days rather than squeezing it into one. Flights land in Paphos and Larnaca from across Europe every day, so most guests arrive on Thursday evening or Friday morning and still have time to swim before anything formal begins.
The island is also compact. You can stand in a pine forest in the morning and be eating grilled octopus by the harbour at lunchtime, which means a weekend programme can show your friends very different sides of the country without anyone spending hours on a coach.
Timing matters too. A Saturday wedding in late September lets guests combine the celebration with a proper autumn holiday, since the sea is at its warmest and schools in most of northern Europe are back in session, which keeps hotel prices calmer and the beaches pleasantly empty.

Friday: settling in and the legal formalities
If you are marrying legally, Friday morning is often when you visit the municipality with your witnesses to sign the declaration. It takes less than an hour, and afterwards the two of you are free. We like to book a quiet lunch for the couple somewhere like the fishing harbour at Latchi, away from the arriving crowd.
Bring the originals of every document to that appointment, together with the passports of both witnesses. Officials are friendly but precise, and a missing apostille is the one thing that can delay the process. We send the scans ahead weeks in advance so there are no surprises on the day.
In the evening, a welcome dinner in a village taverna sets the tone. Places in the hills around Paphos serve endless meze at long tables, and a local musician with a bouzouki turns a meal into a party. It also gives guests who have never met a chance to break the ice before the big day. Keep this night casual. A loose dress code, a single shuttle loop from the main hotel and an early finish mean everyone wakes up fresh on Saturday.
Saturday morning: slow preparations
Cyprus light is bright and hard until late afternoon, so there is no need to rush. Getting ready in a hotel suite with sea views is the classic choice, but a restored stone house in a village like Kathikas gives your photographer shuttered windows, old wooden doors and courtyards heavy with bougainvillea.
Guests can spend the morning at the beach or the pool. If you want to give them something to do, a short guided walk around the Kato Paphos mosaics or a coffee in the old town is easy to arrange and finishes well before lunch.
Hair and make-up artists on the island are used to heat and humidity, so trust their advice on long-wear products and soft updos. Plan a light lunch with plenty of water for the bridal party, and keep the dress and suits indoors in air conditioning until the last moment.

The ceremony: municipal hall or garden
Town hall ceremonies are intimate and surprisingly moving. The marriage officer speaks in English, the room is decorated with flowers, and the whole thing takes around 15 minutes, which leaves plenty of time for photos outside in the warm light. Bring a few printed readings or a short personal note if you would like to add something of your own to the formal words.
Many couples prefer to have the marriage officer come to the venue, which several municipalities allow within their own boundaries. A garden or terrace ceremony around 5.30pm in September catches the sun dropping towards the sea, and guests can move straight to cocktails without changing location.
If your legal wedding happened at home, a symbolic ceremony is completely flexible. Clifftops near the Peyia sea caves and vineyard terraces in the hills both make memorable backdrops.
Saturday night: the Cypriot table
Plated menus exist, but meze is the soul of a Cypriot reception. Dish after dish arrives in waves: warm bread with tahini, halloumi, lountza, keftedes, sheftalia, then souvla and kleftiko at the end. Guests who expect three courses are always delighted by the generosity.
Wine deserves attention. Ask the venue for local bottles made from xynisteri, a fresh white grape, and maratheftiko or yiannoudi for the reds. Producers in the Troodos and the Paphos hills are making excellent wines now, and serving them tells your guests a story about where they are.
For dancing, a live band followed by a DJ is common. If you want to borrow a tradition, the Cypriot custom of guests pinning banknotes to the couple during a slow dance is joyful and always photographed.
Sunday: wine, sea and goodbyes
On Sunday, give people options. Some will want to sleep, others will want an adventure. A boat trip from Latchi to the Blue Lagoon on the Akamas peninsula, with swimming stops and a simple lunch on board, is hard to beat on a calm day.
Wine lovers can head up to Omodos to visit a winery and walk the cobbled lanes around the monastery. The drive takes about an hour from Paphos or Limassol and the cooler mountain air is welcome after a late night.
End with a relaxed beach lunch or barbecue by the pool. Couples rarely regret this final gathering, since it is often the moment when the conversations are best. Halloumi toasties, watermelon and a cooler of KEO beer are all anyone really needs.
Practical notes for planning the weekend
Pick one main hotel for most guests and run shuttles from there. Taxis are available but can be slow on Saturday nights in summer, and driving after the reception is not an option anyone should consider.
Share sun advice in your guest pack: hats, water and shade for elderly relatives during the ceremony. Fans or parasols as favours are practical and look lovely in photographs. Cold towels and a lemonade station before the ceremony are small touches that people remember.
Finally, allow time to rest. The best Cypriot weekends feel unhurried, with long lunches and late swims, and that rhythm only works if the schedule leaves room to breathe.
