Where the Money Goes: An Honest Budget Guide to an Amalfi Coast Wedding

How an Amalfi Coast wedding budget really breaks down: venue, guest rooms, transport on the coastal road, flowers, food and the ways to spend more wisely.

Why the coast costs what it does

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and also one of the trickiest to stage an event in. Everything must navigate a famously narrow road or arrive by sea, venues are small and much in demand, and the season is short. These realities shape the budget more than any single choice of flowers or band.

Understanding where the money goes helps couples make clear decisions. It is rarely a question of cutting back across the board. More often, it is about spending generously on the things that matter most to you and keeping everything else elegant and simple.

Below we walk through the main categories in the order they tend to weigh on the total, with ideas for keeping each one under control. Our own planning fee is listed separately on this page, and it is the one figure that stays fixed whatever you decide.

The venue and exclusive use

On the coast, the venue is usually the largest single expense. Many of the best hotels and villas require exclusive use for weddings above a certain size, which means paying for every room in the property for one or more nights. That can feel daunting, but it also secures accommodation for your closest guests and gives you privacy. On the coast, owners know their terraces are irreplaceable, and pricing reflects it.

Smaller weddings have more flexibility. A terrace hire for a ceremony and dinner without full exclusivity is sometimes possible, especially midweek or in the shoulder months. Asking about a Friday or Sunday date can also unlock better terms.

Read venue contracts carefully. Some include tables, chairs, linen and basic lighting, while others charge separately. Comparing like with like avoids nasty surprises later.

Accommodation for guests

Guest rooms are a significant consideration even if guests pay for themselves. High season rates in Positano and Ravello can be steep, and minimum stays are common. Couples often subsidise rooms for family or negotiate a block rate with a nearby hotel.

Offering a range of options helps. Praiano, Maiori and Minori have more affordable hotels, and Salerno, at the eastern end of the coast, offers city hotels at lower prices with a ferry or short drive to the main villages. Clear guidance in the welcome pack saves guests time and money.

Timing your release dates matters too. Hotels on the coast often ask for unbooked rooms in a block to be returned several months before the wedding. Setting an early RSVP deadline for travel, and sending a gentle reminder a few weeks before it, protects you from paying for empty rooms while giving guests enough time to decide.

Transport on a famous road

The coastal road is spectacular but narrow, and in high season large coaches face restrictions. That means moving guests in minibuses or small coaches, often in several trips. Ferries and private boats are another option and can be a delightful part of the experience. A boat arrival at the venue's own landing, where one exists, is pure theatre.

Transport costs rise when guests are spread across several villages. Grouping them in one place, or choosing a venue within walking distance of most hotels, can save a surprising amount. In Ravello, for example, many hotels are a short stroll from the main venues.

Remember to budget for airport transfers for the couple and key family members, and for supplier transport, which is sometimes billed separately.

Food, wine and service

Catering on the coast is excellent, and much of it is included in hotel packages, which are usually priced per person. A typical menu includes an aperitivo, a seated dinner of three or four courses, wedding cake and an open bar for a set number of hours.

Wine is often a good place to save without sacrificing quality. Local whites from Furore and Tramonti and reds from Campania are delicious and reasonably priced compared with famous labels from the north. Choosing a limoncello toast instead of champagne adds a local flourish and reduces cost.

Service charges, overtime for staff and corkage fees can add up, so we always check them before you sign. Ask for a written quote that lists every one of these lines, and agree overtime rates before the evening, not during it.

Flowers, décor and music

Flowers and décor can be as lavish or as simple as you like. Because the landscape is so striking, many couples find they need less than they expected. Lemons, olive branches, bougainvillea and local ceramics create a strong sense of place at a fraction of the cost of imported blooms.

Music varies from a solo guitarist for the ceremony to a full band for dancing. Some venues limit amplified music, which can actually save money, as an acoustic trio or string quartet can be the perfect fit for a terrace at sunset. A DJ for the later hours is usually more affordable than a large band.

Lighting is often overlooked. Candles and lanterns cost little and transform a terrace after dark.

Where to spend and where to save

Our advice is to decide early on your two or three priorities. For some couples, it is the venue and its view. For others, it is the food and wine, the photography or the music. Spend generously there, and keep the rest simple and beautiful.

Areas where couples often save successfully include stationery, favours, imported flowers and late night extras. Areas where saving rarely pays off include planning, photography and transport, because they shape how smoothly the day runs and how it is remembered. With careful choices, an Amalfi Coast wedding can be both spectacular and sensible.

Finally, keep a contingency line in the budget, even a modest one. A sudden heatwave may call for extra fans and parasols, a sea swell might mean swapping a boat for minibuses, and an unexpected forecast can require a marquee. Couples who set something aside at the start sleep better in the final weeks and enjoy the day without counting every euro.
