Mist, Hydrangeas and Whales: Choosing the Right Month for an Azores Wedding

A month-by-month guide to weddings on São Miguel in the Azores: weather, hydrangea season, whale migrations, sea temperatures, festivals and flights.

An island with its own clock

The Azores do not follow the neat seasons of mainland Europe. Sitting in the middle of the North Atlantic, they enjoy a mild, humid climate year round, rarely freezing in winter and rarely scorching in summer. What changes is the rhythm of rain, wind and light, and the life of the islands that follows it.

Locals joke that you can experience four seasons in a single day, and they are not exaggerating. A morning of sunshine can turn misty by noon and break into a rainbow by teatime. When choosing your month, you are choosing probabilities rather than certainties, and planning flexibility into the day is essential whatever you choose.

With that caveat, each part of the year has its own personality. Here is how we think about it, month by month, when couples ask us when to come.

January to March: green, quiet and moody

The winter months are the wettest and windiest, with frequent Atlantic storms. Temperatures stay mild, usually in the mid teens, and the islands are intensely green. Waterfalls are at their fullest, and the crater lakes can look dramatic under heavy skies.

This is not wedding season for big groups, but an elopement in February can be magical, with hot springs steaming in the cool air and almost no other visitors. Hotels are inexpensive, and you will have the trails to yourselves. Bring thick jumpers and a good waterproof, and choose a venue with a fireplace so the evening feels snug rather than damp.

Carnival in February brings colourful parades and dances to Ponta Delgada and the villages, a lively bonus if your timing coincides. Expect masked dancers, brass bands and plenty of malassadas, the fried sweet dough sold from stalls on every corner.

April and May: blossom and festivals

Spring brings longer days and wildflowers. Azaleas bloom in gardens, and the islands come alive with the first of the religious festivals. The Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres festival in Ponta Delgada, held in May, is the largest in the Azores, with processions, carpets of flowers in the streets and illuminated churches.

Weather is still unpredictable, but rain is less frequent than in winter. Sea temperatures remain cool. It is a good time for couples who want lush landscapes and lower prices, as long as the main celebration has an indoor or covered setting. Light in spring is clear and fresh after rain, and the pastures are at their most vivid, which photographers adore.

Spring is also peak season for spotting migrating blue and fin whales, so a whale watching trip can be a highlight for guests. Sperm whales are resident all year, but the great migrating giants pass mostly between March and June, so plan a boat trip early in the weekend in case the sea is too rough on a given day.

June and July: hydrangea season

June marks the start of the main wedding season. The weather becomes steadier, temperatures reach the low twenties, and by late June the hydrangeas begin to flower, lining country roads in blue, violet and pink. July is their peak, and the island looks extraordinary. Sunsets come late, after nine at midsummer, giving very long evenings for dinners outdoors.

This is also the season of the Holy Spirit festivals, the Festas do Espírito Santo, when villages share sweet bread and a beef soup with everyone who comes by. The idea of feeding the community is a lovely one to borrow, perhaps with a welcome meal open to all your guests.

Book accommodation and flights early for these months, because demand from visitors and returning Azorean families is high. Midsummer also brings the festivals of São João and São Pedro, with music and street parties in several towns.

August and September: warmth and calm seas

The warmest and most settled months, August and September bring air temperatures in the mid twenties and sea temperatures around twenty-two or twenty-three degrees. Swimming, kayaking and boat trips are at their best. The hydrangeas begin to fade in August, but the agapanthus and wild ginger keep the roadsides colourful.

This is the ideal time for outdoor ceremonies, beach parties and long dinners on terraces. Humidity can be high, so consider breathable fabrics and fans for guests. It also helps to schedule the ceremony for late afternoon, when the heat of the day has eased and the clouds often lift from the crater rims.

September is particularly lovely: the sea is still warm, crowds thin out and the light becomes softer and golden. Many of our favourite Azores celebrations have taken place in the first half of September.

October to December: the shoulder and the storms

October often brings a mix of fine days and the first autumn storms. It is still warm enough for outdoor drinks, and the landscape stays green. Prices fall and flights become easier to book. Some of the year's clearest days arrive in October, after the first storm has washed the haze from the sky.

From November the weather becomes wetter and windier, and outdoor plans become a gamble. Still, a small December wedding with a cosy indoor reception, Christmas lights in Ponta Delgada and hot springs on a cool evening has its own charm. Guests can warm up in the thermal pools of Furnas, which stay at around forty degrees whatever the weather does.

Ferry services between islands are reduced or suspended in the off season, so plan inter-island travel by air during these months.

Our recommendation

For most couples, the best window runs from mid June to the end of September, with early September our favourite for its combination of warm seas, stable weather and quieter roads. If hydrangeas are important to you, aim for July.

For elopements and adventurous couples, consider May or October, when the islands are lush and quiet and prices are kinder. Whatever the month, build flexibility into the timing, bring a stylish umbrella and embrace the mist; it is what makes Azorean photos so atmospheric.

And whichever month you choose, give guests a packing list. Layers, walking shoes, swimwear for the hot springs and a light rain jacket will see them through any combination of sunshine, mist and wind the islands decide to send.
