Chasing the Light: Laguna Beach Photo Spots for Your Wedding Day

Laguna Beach wedding photo spots: hidden coves, the Victoria Beach tower, Heisler Park cliffs, canyon groves, plus the tide and sunset timing behind each one.

A town built for the camera

Laguna Beach was founded by painters who came for the light, and photographers have followed in their footsteps for a century. The town faces west and slightly south, so the sun sets over the open Pacific for much of the year, and the bluffs and coves create endless layers of rock, water and sky. Even on a cloudy day, the soft diffused light flatters skin tones and colours alike.

That said, the best images rarely happen by accident. Tides, sun angles, crowds and permits all shape what is possible. Here is our guide to the places we return to again and again, and how to make the most of each one.

One overall tip before the list: schedule at least forty five minutes for portraits between the ceremony and dinner, and plan routes carefully. Pacific Coast Highway traffic can be slow, and every minute in a car is a minute lost from the golden hour.

Victoria Beach and the pirate tower

Hidden behind private homes in South Laguna, Victoria Beach is reached by a narrow staircase between houses. At its southern end stands a cylindrical stone tower rising straight from the rocks, built in the 1920s to give access from the house above to the beach. Locals call it the pirate tower, and it looks like something from a fairytale.

The tower is only reachable at low tide, and the sand can be wet underfoot, so this is a spot for adventurous couples with sensible shoes for the walk. Late afternoon light washes across the stone beautifully, and the waves crash dramatically on the rocks nearby.

Because access is limited and the beach is small, we usually visit with just the couple and photographer, rather than the full wedding party. The resulting images feel intimate and almost cinematic.

Heisler Park and the cliffside gardens

In the heart of town, Heisler Park stretches along the bluffs with palm trees, colourful planting and benches looking straight out to sea. Paths wind down to Picnic Beach and Diver's Cove, where tide pools reveal anemones and crabs at low water.

This is one of the most accessible locations, ideal for group shots and family portraits. The gazebo and the lawns near the northern end of the park are especially popular. It can get busy on weekends, so we often arrive early or shoot in the final hour of light when day visitors leave.

Note that the city requires permits for commercial photography in its parks and beaches, and these must be arranged ahead of time. We take care of this as part of the planning.

Thousand Steps and the southern coves

The name exaggerates slightly, but the staircase down to Thousand Steps Beach is steep enough to make an impression. At the bottom you find a wide, sandy cove with dramatic cliffs and a sea cave at the south end, which can be explored at low tide.

Smaller coves along the southern shoreline, such as West Street and Aliso Beach, offer similar drama with easier access. Aliso has a pier footing and wide sand, perfect for running and dancing shots without worrying about the hem of a gown.

Remember that climbing back up those steps in formal wear takes time and breath. We plan these shoots for couples with energy to spare, often on a separate day. For guests who would rather watch than climb, the bluff top above Thousand Steps offers a wide view down onto the cove, and a long lens can capture the couple far below as tiny figures against the surf, an image that often ends up framed above a fireplace.

Laguna Canyon and the golden hills

Inland, the landscape changes completely. Laguna Canyon Road runs between sage covered hills that turn gold in late summer, with groves of eucalyptus and sycamore offering dappled shade. The light here is warm and earthy, a lovely counterpoint to the cool blues of the ocean shots.

Several venues in the canyon have their own gardens and terraces, and the nearby Laguna Coast Wilderness Park offers trails with sweeping views. Dry hillsides look especially good in the hour before sunset, when the grasses glow.

Because of wildfire concerns, smoking, sparklers and open flames are prohibited in these areas. We substitute battery candles and LED wands for any after dark photographs.

Crystal Cove and its vintage cottages

Just north of Laguna, Crystal Cove State Park preserves a row of 1930s beach cottages, painted in faded pastels and set on a sandy cove. The atmosphere is nostalgic and unpretentious, and the Beachcomber restaurant serves a fine Bloody Mary.

Photographs here capture old California charm: wooden porches, weathered fences and surfers carrying boards through the dunes. State park rules apply, and a separate film permit is needed for professional photography.

The cottages also make a charming setting for a day after session, when the pressure is off and you can wear something casual. Couples often bring a picnic, wander down to the water and simply enjoy being married, while the photographer captures it all quietly from a distance.

Timing everything around the sun and tides

The two charts we consult most are the sunset table and the tide table. In June, the sun sets after eight; by December it drops before five. Low tide opens up caves and towers; high tide can swallow entire beaches. Matching these with your ceremony time determines which spots are possible.

If the marine layer rolls in, do not despair. Soft cloud makes skin glow and adds a moody, painterly quality to the sea. Some of our favourite Laguna images were captured on grey June evenings, when the sun broke through for just a few moments before setting.

A good photographer will also scout the light the day before, standing at each location at the planned hour. That small investment reveals shadows from cliffs or houses that a midday visit would miss, and it means everyone arrives on the day with a clear, calm plan rather than a guess. Finally, give yourself a little time alone. Even ten quiet minutes on a bluff after the ceremony, with only the photographer nearby, often produces the most honest pictures of the day.
