Vows on the Water: Planning a Yacht and Marina Wedding in Puerto Aventuras

How to plan a yacht ceremony and marina celebration in Puerto Aventuras, from choosing the right boat and timing the sail to a candlelit dinner on the quay.

Why the marina changes everything

Most Caribbean weddings in Mexico happen on the sand. In Puerto Aventuras, the marina opens another possibility. Boats of every size are moored a few steps from hotels and restaurants, the water inside the harbour is flat, and the sheltered bays outside it are usually calm. A wedding can move from land to sea and back again without anyone needing to travel far.

That flexibility makes the village ideal for couples who love the water but do not want a huge production. The scale is small, the logistics are short and guests feel part of the life of the harbour rather than shut away in a resort.

It also gives the weekend a natural rhythm: mornings on the water, afternoons on the sand and evenings on the quay.

Choosing the right boat

Charter boats in Puerto Aventuras range from sleek motor yachts to wide sailing catamarans. Catamarans are stable, spacious and great for groups of twenty to forty, with nets at the bow for lounging and photographs. Motor yachts feel more glamorous and suit smaller, more formal ceremonies.

Ask about shade, toilets, crew and how many guests can sit comfortably, rather than the legal maximum. A boat can feel crowded quickly, especially once a celebrant, photographer and musicians are on board. We always visit the vessel first and check its safety equipment and insurance.

For bigger weddings, one option is to hold the ceremony on a beach and use the boat for a smaller group, such as the wedding party, for a sunset cruise afterwards. It keeps the cost down and the deck uncrowded.

Timing on the water

The best time for a ceremony at sea is usually late afternoon, when the wind drops and the light softens. In winter, that means setting out around four. Allow time for boarding, a short sail to a sheltered anchorage and the ceremony itself, followed by drinks and photographs as the sun sets over the land.

Sea conditions vary, so we agree a weather check with the captain the day before and on the morning. If the wind rises, the boat can stay in a protected bay or the ceremony can move ashore. Having a land-based alternative ready keeps the day stress-free.

Legal formalities do not happen at sea, so a yacht ceremony is always symbolic. If you want the marriage to be official in Mexico, a civil judge can marry you briefly on land beforehand, perhaps on the morning of the wedding with just your witnesses, leaving the boat free for the vows that matter to you.

Think about who will enjoy a boat and who may not. Older relatives, very young children and anyone prone to seasickness might prefer to wait at the marina and greet you on your return. A welcome drink on the quay for them keeps everyone included.

For those on board, practical touches matter: flat shoes, sunscreen, hats and a light layer for the evening breeze. Provide water, simple snacks and seasickness remedies, and make sure there is a sheltered area for hair and make-up touch-ups. Musicians should use battery-powered equipment or acoustic instruments.

Bear in mind that photographers need room to move. On a catamaran, the best angles often come from the bow nets or from a second, smaller boat running alongside, which also captures the yacht against the coastline. It is an extra cost, but the images are usually the ones couples frame.

Dinner on the quayside

After the boat returns, the celebration can continue right on the dock or at a waterfront restaurant. Long tables beside the moored yachts, strings of lights and the reflections on the water create a relaxed, romantic setting that feels quite different from a ballroom or beach.

Seafood is the natural choice: whole grilled fish, lobster, ceviche and shrimp tacos, with a good selection of Mexican wines and cocktails. A mariachi or trio playing as guests arrive adds a festive touch, and the quay atmosphere encourages people to mingle and linger.

Check with the marina and restaurants about permits, noise limits and closing times, as residents live nearby and quiet hours apply. Most places are happy to accommodate a wedding party, provided the music softens as the evening grows late and guests drift on to a bar or villa to continue.

The beach alternative

For those who prefer solid ground, the sheltered bays of Puerto Aventuras are among the gentlest on the coast. Fatima Bay and Chan Yuyum offer shallow, calm water and soft sand, perfect for a barefoot ceremony with children splashing nearby afterwards. The resorts here can arrange arches, seating and shade.

Many couples combine both: a beach ceremony for all guests and a boat trip for a smaller group, either on the day or the next morning. It is a lovely way to enjoy the best of the village.

A beach ceremony also makes styling easier. Arches of palm and tropical flowers, rows of wooden chairs and a few lanterns are all you need, since the turquoise water does the rest. Ask the resort about privacy, as some bays are shared with other guests during the afternoon.

The day after

A morning on the water is the perfect way to unwind. A snorkelling trip to the reef, a swim with turtles at Akumal or a lazy cruise along the coast lets guests relax together before heading home. Breakfast on board, with fresh fruit and coffee, adds to the sense of occasion.

Alternatively, a brunch on the quayside or a gathering at a villa pool keeps everyone close to the marina. Whatever you choose, keep it unhurried. Puerto Aventuras is at its best when the days feel slow and easy, with the boats rocking gently in the harbour.

Before everyone scatters, consider a small gesture: postcards of the marina for guests to write to the two of you, opened on your first anniversary. It is the kind of simple, personal touch that suits the scale of Puerto Aventuras, where the whole village seems to know when a wedding is in town.
