Golden hour on the peninsula: the best photo spots for a Saint-Tropez wedding
La Ponche at dawn, Pampelonne at sunset, the citadel and the vine rows of Gassin: where and when to take wedding portraits in and around Saint-Tropez.
Light, colour and timing
Saint-Tropez has been painted, filmed and photographed for more than a century. Signac and Matisse came for the light; Brigitte Bardot and the New Wave directors came for the freedom. Today, wedding photographers come for the same reasons: the pastel houses, the sea in a dozen shades of blue and a light that turns gold in the late afternoon.
The secret to great wedding portraits here is timing. The village is crowded in the middle of the day, and summer sunlight is harsh. Early morning and the hour before sunset are when the magic happens, and the best photographers plan their schedule around those moments.
Below are the locations we recommend most, with notes on timing and logistics.
A good rule of thumb is to give your photographer around ninety minutes of couple portraits across the weekend, split between two or three sessions, rather than trying to cram everything into the wedding day itself. It keeps you relaxed, lets you enjoy your guests and gives far more variety in the final gallery, from soft dawn tones to the deep amber of a Pampelonne evening.
Two bands
La Ponche and the old port at dawn
La Ponche, the historic fishermen's quarter, is a cluster of narrow lanes and ochre houses around a tiny beach. At dawn it is almost empty, and the light reflects softly off the walls and the water. Fishing boats pulled onto the sand add charm and authenticity.
From La Ponche, it is a short walk to the port, where the colourful façades and the bell tower of the church reflect in the water. Early in the morning, before the cafés open and the yachts wake up, you can capture the village in peace. A pre wedding shoot here is a wonderful way to begin the day.
Ask your photographer about a sunrise session the day after the wedding, when nerves are gone and you can enjoy it fully.
The citadel and its views
The citadel, a seventeenth century fortress on the hill above the village, offers sweeping views over the rooftops, the gulf and the mountains of the Maures. Its gardens and ramparts provide a dramatic backdrop, especially in the warm light of late afternoon.
Peacocks roam the grounds, and the old walls give texture to portraits. Access depends on opening hours, so we always check in advance and plan the shoot accordingly.
Nearby, the Graniers beach path leads below the citadel to the small marine cemetery and the chapel of Sainte-Anne beyond, a calm and slightly melancholic setting that photographers love for its views of the gulf. It is an easy ten minute walk from the port, ideal for a quiet moment away from the bustle.
Sparkle heels
The Place des Lices and the village lanes
The Place des Lices, shaded by plane trees, is the heart of local life, with pétanque players, cafés and the famous market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. A photo here, perhaps playing a game of boules in wedding attire, captures the relaxed spirit of Saint-Tropez.
The surrounding lanes, with bougainvillea, painted shutters and small boutiques, are perfect for candid shots as you stroll hand in hand. Early evening, when the light softens and the shops glow, is particularly atmospheric.
If your wedding falls on a market day, avoid the square until the stalls are packed away around one o'clock, then return in the late afternoon. The plane trees throw long shadows across the gravel and the old men return to their boules, giving a scene that feels unchanged in decades and makes for timeless pictures.
Pampelonne and the beaches at sunset
Pampelonne, the long sandy beach on the peninsula's eastern side, is famous for its beach clubs, but it also offers quiet stretches of sand at dusk. The sunset light over the dunes and the sea is soft and flattering, and the backdrop of beach umbrellas and pines evokes the Riviera summer.
For a more secluded setting, the beaches around Cap Taillat and Gigaro, south of Ramatuelle, are protected and wild. The coastal path offers rocks, coves and turquoise water, ideal for a sunset session away from the crowds.
Many couples schedule a twenty minute portrait session during the cocktail hour, when the light is at its best and guests are busy enjoying the champagne.
Vineyards and hilltop villages
The vineyards of Gassin and Ramatuelle offer a different atmosphere: rows of vines, old stone farmhouses and the sea in the distance. Late afternoon light filtering through the vines is magical, and in September you might even catch the harvest.
The perched villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle, with their narrow streets and panoramic terraces, make wonderful backdrops for romantic portraits. Gassin's terrace in particular offers one of the most spectacular views on the coast, stretching across the gulf to the islands.
Ask permission before stepping into vine rows on a working estate, and avoid the weeks just before harvest when the grapes are fragile. Most domaines are delighted to help if you ask kindly, and some will even open their cellar for a toast in front of the barrels.
Practical advice for the shoot
Plan for travel time between locations, especially in summer traffic. Wear comfortable shoes for cobbled lanes and sandy paths, and bring a change of footwear for the beach. Drones are restricted in many areas, so check with your photographer before planning aerial shots.
Most importantly, leave space in the schedule. The best photos often come from unplanned moments: a fisherman's smile, a gust of wind in the veil or a quiet glance at sunset. Saint-Tropez rewards couples who slow down and let the light do the work.
Finally, think about outfits. Light fabrics move beautifully in the sea breeze, while heavy trains can be a challenge on sand and cobbles. A second, simpler dress or a change of jacket for the evening portraits lets you move freely and adds variety to the album without any extra effort.
