North, South or Inland? Where Your Guests Should Stay for a Sardinia Wedding
Costa Smeralda glamour, southern sands, Catalan Alghero or a rustic inland retreat: a guide to where wedding guests should base themselves in Sardinia.
An island bigger than it looks
The first thing to understand about Sardinia is its scale. It is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, and driving from Olbia in the north east to Cagliari in the south takes around three and a half hours. Guests who imagine they can pop across for dinner in another corner of the island are often surprised.
That is why choosing where people stay matters so much. A wedding works best when the venue and the guests' accommodation sit in the same region, ideally within half an hour of each other. Shuttles can handle the rest, and everyone can enjoy the evening without worrying about long drives on winding roads.
Each coast has its own personality, and choosing between them is part of the fun. Here is how we think about them when guiding couples and their guests.

The Costa Smeralda: glamour and convenience
For many guests, the north east is the obvious choice. Olbia airport is close, flights are plentiful in summer and the Costa Smeralda has a deep pool of hotels, from celebrated resorts on private bays to smaller boutique properties tucked into the hills. Porto Cervo offers marina life, designer shops and smart restaurants.
It is also the most expensive part of Sardinia, especially in July and August, when rooms can be scarce and minimum stays apply. Guests on tighter budgets might look at Cannigione or Palau, both pleasant seaside towns with ferries to the Maddalena islands and more modest prices.
Wherever they stay, guests in this area benefit from easy access to some of the island's most famous beaches. Spiaggia del Principe and Capriccioli are only minutes from the main hotels.
San Pantaleo and the Gallura hills
A short drive inland from the coast, the village of San Pantaleo is a favourite with guests who want character. Its granite peaks, stone houses and little piazza give it a bohemian charm, and its Thursday market is a lively place to pick up local crafts, cheeses and jewellery.
The surrounding Gallura hills are dotted with country hotels and stazzi, traditional farmhouses converted into rentals. Staying here combines peace and privacy with quick access to the beaches, often for less than a seafront hotel. Evenings are cooler too, which many guests appreciate in midsummer.
Vermentino di Gallura, the island's only DOCG white wine, comes from these hills. Several wineries welcome visitors for tastings, a pleasant way to fill an afternoon before the welcome dinner.
Misty hills
The south: long beaches and family resorts
Southern Sardinia feels softer and more expansive. Around Pula and Chia, dunes and wide beaches of pale sand stretch for kilometres, and the water is shallow and inviting. Large resorts here have everything on site, which makes them practical for big groups and families with children.
Cagliari, the island's capital, is around an hour away, with its own airport, historic quarter and good restaurants. Guests who like a bit of city life can stay there and travel to the coast for the wedding. The lagoons near Chia are home to flamingos, a lovely sight for an early morning walk.
The south also enjoys a slightly longer season. Warm weather often lingers into October, and the area is less exposed to the maestrale than the north, which makes it a sensible choice for couples considering an autumn date. Nora, with its Roman ruins beside the sea, is close enough for a morning visit on the day after the wedding.
Alghero and the north west
Alghero has a flavour all its own. Settled by Catalans in the fourteenth century, it still has street signs in Catalan and a cuisine shaped by both Spain and Sardinia. The old town sits on sea walls, and the evening passeggiata along the ramparts is one of the island's pleasures.
The airport is just outside town, and accommodation ranges from historic hotels inside the walls to resorts along the nearby beaches. For a wedding at a venue on the west coast or the Capo Caccia headland, Alghero is the natural base. Guests can visit the Neptune's Grotto, a sea cave reached by boat or by a long staircase down the cliff.
Lobster cooked Catalan style, with tomato and onion, is the signature dish here. It makes a memorable welcome dinner for guests arriving from abroad.
Inland retreats for a quieter celebration
Some couples skip the coast altogether and celebrate in the heart of the island. The Supramonte mountains, around Oliena and Dorgali, offer country hotels with deep roots in Sardinian culture, dramatic limestone landscapes and food prepared in the old ways.
Guests here should plan on staying in the venue or close by, as roads are winding and nights are dark. The reward is a wedding that feels genuinely different: shepherds' songs, spit roasted meats, local wine served from the barrel and a starlit sky with no light pollution at all. The beaches of the Orosei gulf are within an hour for those who want to swim.
If you go this route, consider sending guests a short reading list or a playlist of canto a tenore, the haunting four voice singing of the Barbagia recognised by UNESCO. Arriving with a little context makes the experience richer, and a live group performing during the aperitivo becomes a moment nobody forgets.
Practical tips for every base
Whichever area you choose, advise guests to hire a car if they want to explore, but to rely on organised shuttles for the wedding itself. Roads can be narrow, signage limited and parking at beaches difficult in summer.
Encourage early booking, especially in August, when Italian families flock to the island. And remind guests to pack for both sun and wind: a light jacket for breezy evenings, reef shoes for rocky coves and plenty of sun cream. With the right base, they will spend the weekend discovering why Sardinia so often becomes a place people return to again and again.
Finally, put one person in charge of answering guest questions in the months before. Travel within Sardinia raises more queries than most destinations, and a single friendly contact keeps the answers consistent and saves you dozens of messages.
