Planes, trains and island ferries: getting your guests to a Toulon wedding

Airports, TGV routes, ferries to Porquerolles and transfer times: a practical travel guide for couples and guests heading to a wedding near Toulon and Bandol.

Why logistics matter more here

A wedding near Toulon can take place in three quite different landscapes: the city harbour, the Bandol wine country to the west, or the islands of Porquerolles and Port-Cros to the east. Each is wonderful, and each has its own route, timings and quirks. Guests who understand how to get there arrive relaxed; guests who do not can spend half a day in traffic or miss the last boat.

This guide gathers what we tell every couple and their guests. It assumes the wedding is during the main season, from May to October, when services run at full strength and the coast is at its busiest. Out of season, ferries thin out and some flights stop, so plan accordingly.

We suggest sharing a simplified version of this information on your wedding website at least six months before the date, so guests can book flights while fares are still reasonable.

Flying in: three airports to compare

Toulon-Hyères airport is the closest, about twenty minutes from the city and ten from Giens and the island ferries. It is small and pleasant, but international routes are limited and seasonal, so many guests connect through Paris. Check schedules carefully; a direct flight from your city may only run on certain days of the week.

Marseille Provence is the main international gateway, with direct flights from across Europe, the United Kingdom and North Africa. The drive to Toulon takes around an hour on the A50 motorway, a little more to Bandol, and well over an hour to the Giens peninsula. Nice is further, around an hour and three quarters in good traffic, but worth considering for guests on long haul routes.

For guests flying privately, the Hôtel du Castellet sits beside a small airport with its own runway, which can be convenient for a family arriving together.

Whichever airport guests choose, encourage them to land by mid afternoon on the day before any island event, never on the morning itself.

Coming by train

The TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon to Toulon takes around four hours, and trains continue east to Hyères on some services. It is a comfortable, scenic option for guests already in France or travelling from London via Paris, and fares booked in advance are very reasonable.

Regional TER trains link Toulon with Bandol, Ollioules and Marseille along the coast, and with Hyères to the east. They are practical for the city and Bandol, but for vineyards in the hills or for evening events, taxis or shuttles are more reliable.

Toulon station sits close to the centre, so guests staying in town can walk or take a short taxi ride to most hotels.

Getting around the coast by road

Hiring a car gives guests freedom, but summer traffic on the coast roads can be slow, especially on Saturday, the main changeover day for holiday rentals. Parking in the old villages of Le Castellet and La Cadière is limited, and narrow lanes are tight for large vehicles.

For the wedding day itself, we always recommend shuttles. A coach collecting guests from two or three hotels, with a schedule printed in their welcome pack, removes any worry about driving after dinner. Late shuttles at midnight and two in the morning let everyone choose their own pace.

Taxis are available but not plentiful in the hills, so pre booking return journeys is wise for anyone not taking the shuttle.

Island crossings to Porquerolles

Porquerolles is reached by ferry from La Tour Fondue at the tip of the Giens peninsula. The crossing takes about twenty minutes, and boats run frequently in summer, roughly every half hour during the day. Cars are not allowed on the island, so guests walk, cycle or use the small electric shuttles that carry luggage to hotels.

For the wedding party, we book private water taxis, which can leave from Hyères or Giens at any hour and drop guests close to the venue. They are essential for evening events, because the last public ferry back usually leaves in the early evening.

If the sea is rough, crossings can be delayed or cancelled. We always plan a mainland fallback and watch the forecasts closely in the week before.

Timing the wedding day

Allow generous buffers. A guest staying in Bandol needs around forty five minutes to reach the Giens ferry, longer in summer traffic. Getting a group of eighty onto boats takes time, so we plan arrivals in waves and keep welcome drinks ready on the island jetty.

For vineyard weddings in the hills, start the ceremony late in the afternoon, after the heat peaks, and allow time for guests to find the venue if they are driving. Clear signage at the road junctions is a small detail that saves a lot of confused phone calls.

On the island itself, distances are short but the paths are sandy. Golf buggies or electric carts for older guests and anyone in heels are worth arranging with the venue in advance. Think too about luggage: guests staying overnight should send bags ahead with the hotel porter service rather than carrying them across the island in formal clothes.

A checklist for guests

Book flights early, especially into Toulon-Hyères, where seats are limited. Choose accommodation close to the venue or on a shuttle route. Bring comfortable shoes for village lanes and island paths, sun protection, and a light layer for breezy evenings by the sea.

Above all, arrive a day early if you can. The Var coast rewards slow travel, and an extra morning to swim, wander the Toulon market or taste a Bandol rosé turns a wedding trip into a holiday.

Finally, save the contact numbers that matter in your phone: the shuttle company, the water taxi skipper and the venue manager. If a flight is delayed or a guest is lost in Hyères, those three calls solve almost every problem within minutes, and on the day itself our team handles them so you never have to.
